Invincible: Family Matters
Review by Tara, 09/02
Invincible: Family Matters vol 1
Author: Robert Kirkman
Art: Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley
Publisher: Image Comics
This is possibly one of my favourite comics so this review is likely to be a little biased. Robert Kirkman is quite frankly a brilliant writer. Invincible is full of humour and action but not in a way that becomes shallow. This is not the bwa ha of J.M DeMatties and Keith Giffen (although I’m not knocking them, those guys are great!!) Invincible is written in a way that it is possible to connect with the characters without it become overly emotionally loaded or cheesy. Although I’m really not sure how many people pick up a comic book in order to connect with fictional superheroes. What I’m trying to say is that it is very accessible. Mark, the main protagonist is not exceptionally smart, he is just an ordinary teenager whose father happens to be a superhero.
Mark longs for the day when he will get super powers like his father but when it happens it isn’t really all it is cracked up to be, plus the costume he designs is a little dumb. The story just builds from there and it shows no signs of slowing down. One of the best things about it is that so many things are going on at once and Mark does not even know about half of them. Robert Kirkman presents a really fresh look at the superhero genre and it’s not just me who likes Robert Kirkman! Testament to his ability is the fact that Marvel has him slated to do Ultimate X-men in the next couple of months so if picking up an Image comic falls out of your comfort zone try that.
I’d recommend this book for anyone 12yrs and over (because of reading age, not content). Good especially if you like superhero stuff but do not want to get entrenched in marvel or D.C continuity but I would think even people who don’t like superhero stuff could like this book. The best way to get hold of it is in collected form (trade paperback) as tracking down the issues is nigh on impossible.
